The Spoils

May 29, 2014 / 18 notes

To an artist, there is nothing more challenging than staring into the endless possibilities of a blank canvas. In it lies an untarnished perfection of a future yet realized and all our ambitions to bring into existence something authentic, original and honest. Yet, we struggle less with “how” we will work than “what” we will create. The Legendeer Workshop will teach creatives methods in ideation, content development, the shaping of personal voice and stylistic choices that come from the most obvious of places; your own life. Legendeer, life is story.

Confusion
From Blue Collar/White Collar by Sterling Hundley
In my career, I have assumed a great deal of the viewer. I have assumed a visual intelligence and a collective curiosity. When illustration transcends its function and the commerce that instigates it, imagery has the potential to move the masses.

Illustration is oft defined as Illuminating Text. This definition can relegate the image as secondary to text and the artist as servant to the author. To be commissioned does not dismiss accountability. Illustration is art that must survive in spite of commerce and purpose.

I ask the question: must illustration articulate?
