In my career, I have assumed a great deal of the viewer. I have assumed a visual intelligence and a collective curiosity. When illustration transcends its function and the commerce that instigates it, imagery has the potential to move the masses.
Illustration is oft defined as Illuminating Text. This definition can relegate the image as secondary to text and the artist as servant to the author. To be commissioned does not dismiss accountability. Illustration is art that must survive in spite of commerce and purpose.
I ask the question: must illustration articulate?
